Students and parents must sign and turn in a copy of MC2's laptop policy (available at under the MC2 Documents & Forms section) prior to attending class.

Required Materials

Students should bring a pen/pencil and the class workbook to class each week. Parents need to print out the 30-page class workbook for each student and put it in a 3-ring binder or portfolio folder that will allow students to flip through the pages easily without getting them out of order. The class workbook will be sent electronically to parents by late July. (Parents may choose to print double-sided and/or in black & white if they wish.)

About the course

Students will be introduced to basic coding concepts through unplugged activities as well as plugged-in coding. Topics include motor control, servo control, if/then statements, for and while loops, functions, variables, and more.

Unplugged learning will include worksheets and group activities to illustrate coding principles.

Plugged-in learning will occur with our robotics team's cardboard "protobot". Students will explore existing code (our robot uses Vex components and RobotC programming) and take turns editing the code to see how it affects the robot. (There will be 1 robot and 1 laptop for the class, but we will project the code so it is easy for all students to see.) Students will learn to compile code, download it to the robot, and troubleshoot.
