About the course
Rather than providing a broad overview of British literature, this class will dive deeply into a limited number of great works, which students will read in their entirety. It will also include writing, particularly literary analysis. The class is intended to fulfill the requirements of a high school English credit.
Over the course of the year, we will cover the following works:
• Animal Farm by George Orwell
• Dr.Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson
• The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
• A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
• A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens
• The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells
• Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen
Students will have a study guide for each book, with assignments to complete as they read. They will write an essay after finishing each work.
We will use class time to discuss the reading and study guide questions, edit and share student essays, review writing strategies, and occasionally read poetry and short stories. Our discussions will include interpreting works from a Christian worldview.
Note: Because generative AI can easily cheat our students out of learning to write, parents should plan to be involved in, or at least overseeing, their student’s assignments.
